In this module, participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the building blocks of creating safe, caring and orderly schools, Threat and Risk Assessment, as well as how the Province’s ERASE strategy supports school safety. Key resources, which are available to school communities, will also be shared.

The course is intended for:

  • New and returning Safe School Coordinators;
  • Principals, Vice Principals, Teachers-in-Charge, Educators and other designated support staff;
  • Community stakeholders who support school safety

Overview:

Participants will gain an understanding of the building blocks of creating safe, caring and orderly schools, Threat and Risk Assessment, as well as how the Province’s ERASE strategy supports school safety. In addition, they will be aware of the main resources available to school communities to promote school safety and diversity. The participants will be able to translate the Safe, Caring and Orderly Schools policy into action.

  • Identifying relevant topics in school codes of conduct
  • Providing recommendations for appropriate updates in school codes of conduct
  • Understanding your role in promoting inclusiveness and acknowledging diversity and anti-racism, SOGI educational awareness and Human Rights Code review
  • Defining, creating, and assessing climate and culture
  • Identifying appropriate actions to promote school connectedness and engagement with students, staff, parents, and community partners
  • Understanding school systems and their respective impact on safety
  • Understanding the importance of the physical school environment to ensure a safe environment for staff and students
  • Selecting appropriate strategies for prevention, promotion, and intervention in school safety
  • Recognizing ways to evaluate and ensure an open school system
  • Identifying and applying appropriate and effective strategies and interventions to address mean behaviour, peer conflict and all forms of bullying
  • Identifying and applying strategies to promote positive mental health and well-being for K-12 (Elementary, Middle and Secondary)
  • Identifying and applying strategies to ensure a trauma-informed classroom environment
  • Understanding the threat assessment process in schools and how to initiate it when presented with worrisome, concerning, or threat-related behaviour
  • Understanding key points of the School Act such as Section 177 Maintenance order
  • Identifying leadership opportunities for students to promote safe and caring schools and the erase reporting tool
